Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
The ACGME is a private, non-profit council that evaluates and accredits medical
residency programs in the United States. This extensive site offers a searchable
list of ACGME-accredited programs and sponsoring institutions. The site links to
the 28 Residency Review Committees (RRC), including the one for family medicine.
It contains a great deal of resident information, including program requirements
and other useful information for all medical specialties.
American Medical Association (AMA) Resident & Fellow Section
This section of the AMA focuses on representing and advocating for resident and
fellow physicians and training young physician leaders. The site offers an
extensive Career Resources link presented in three distinct groups: from medical
school to residency, during residency and fellowship, and transitioning into
practice. Access also is provided to the AMA-RFS listserv.
Educational
Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
The site offers information on the required certification for international
medical graduates who want to enter ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship
programs in the United States. The site outlines the eligibility and examination
requirements for certification and takes applicants through the certification
process.
The
Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
This service transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, MSPEs,
transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical
schools to fellowship, osteopathic internship, and residency programs using the
Internet.
FREIDA Online
The Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA) is an
online database with over 8,200 graduate medical education programs accredited
by ACGME, as well as over 200 combined specialty programs. This is the primary
online search tool used by medical students to find residency programs by state
and specialty throughout the country.
National Resident Matching
Program (NRMP)
This site is the funneling point to match medical graduates’ preferences for
residency positions with program director’s preferences for applicants. The site
outlines the fees, deadlines and steps to participate in a NRMP match.
United States Medical
Licensing Examination™ (USMLE™)
This helpful site provides information on how to apply, prepare, and take the
USMLE Steps. USMLE scores are required for state medical boards to grant medical
graduates with their initial license to practice medicine.
