St. Luke's Hospital / Univeristy of Toledo Family Residency Program Frequently Asked Questions
Listed below are some of the most commonly asked questions regarding the St. Luke’s Hospital/ University of Toledo Family Medicine Residency Program.

Does your family medicine residency program accept applications from international medical graduates?
Yes, we encourage international medical graduates to apply to our residency program. We require a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate before we submit to our Match list. Our program will sponsor applicants with a J-1 or H-1b visa. Preference is given to international graduates who have meaningful United States (U.S.) or Canadian clinical training that involves patient decision-making. Experience in the U.S. in an observership role is more desirable than no U.S. experience at all. We do not sponsor observerships.

How many residents does your family medicine residency program accept each year?
Currently, our residency program accepts four new residents each year.

Is the family medicine residency program an unopposed residency program?
Our family medicine residency is the only in-house residency program at St. Luke’s Hospital. Family medicine residents are first in line for patient care and clinical opportunities.

How often do residents receive feedback?
Our residents receive formal feedback on a quarterly basis from faculty members. In addition, written feedback is provided monthly after each completed rotation. Residents receive informal feedback regularly from faculty and supervising residents as they perform their rounds and attend to patients.

Will your family medicine residency program accept candidates who graduated from medical school many years ago?
Yes, but we give preference to candidates who have graduated within the last three years.

Do you ever interview candidates with prior post-graduate training in ACGME-approved programs?
Yes, but we require details of that training, including specialty, duration, locations, program director, In-Training Examination results and evaluations.

How do I apply to your family medicine residency program?
All applications are taken through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We do not accept paper applications. For more information, check out our How to Apply section of this Web site.
